In our June 2018 newsletter a story about protecting the Monaro bark eating Koalas received lots of attention and we thought we would remind our readers of the discussion between Tweed Shire Council’s  Scott Hetherington and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service’s Max Beukers in the 2017 Bushfire Conference that compared two different fire management strategies for protecting koalas from the far north and south coasts of NSW.

You can read the full transcript of that conversation here, or simply take a look through the power-point presentation that accompanied their presentations.

For a more detailed look at how to balance fire management and koala protection The Tweeds Shire Council has two documents detailing their approach:

Tweed Coast Koala Fire Management Plan (7.04mB PDF)

Hazard Reduction Burn Guidelines for Koala Habitat on the Tweed Coast (4.21mB PDF)
