Transport for NSW has launched a new Aboriginal Cultural Landscapes Project across the state to support Indigenous land management practices across their transport network.
The project is being trialed at three pilot sites on Bunjalung, Gomeroi and Yuin Country, as part of the NSW Government’s Network Resilience Program, where cultural burning will be implemented as one of a range of traditional land management practices to help reduce the risk of bush fire to the rail network.
A number of key agencies are supporting the pilot program including Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Forestry Corporation of NSW, Local Land Services, local councils and others.
A research project in conjunction with the new program, jointly run by Transport for NSW and La Trobe University, will investigate how cultural land and water management can help build resilience to natural disasters.
