Grassy Box Woodlands

Jewels in the Landscape

This guide published by CSIRO in 2015 aims to help land managers recognise, understand and manage Box‑Gum Grassy Woodlands that contain particularly high conservation value ground-layers with a diversity of native wildflowers. It draws on long-term scientific research to understand what makes the ground‑layer diverse, and highlights management regimes that are beneficial or detrimental to this diversity.

The booklet provides considerable information on how to integrate fire into management of Box-Gum Grassy Woodlands. The discussion also raises the need to consider new pathways for implementing fire, for example through grant schemes and collaboration with local Aboriginal people in sites containing culturally significant ground-layer plant species.
