NCC’s Healthy Ecosystems team has produced a series of 12 short training videos on the monitoring work being carried out as part of the Large Forest Owls Project.

The Large Forest Owls Project is working with landholders to protect and enhance key nesting sites and habitat resources for Vulnerable large forest owls across the Richmond-Clarence Lowlands on the mid-north coast of NSW. The project is working to ensure the survival of three Vulnerable species: the Barking Owl (Ninox connivens), Masked Owl (Tyto novaehollandiae) and the Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua).

As part of this project there were plans to run a community workshop. However, due to COVID-19 the workshop was moved online and these videos made as an alternative to in person demonstrations.

Project coordinator Pete Knock and large forest owls specialist Dr Dave Milledge take us through the steps involved in selecting, installing and monitoring nest boxes, how to maintain and use acoustic song meters, and the effects of the recent fire season on the project area.
