A four-page fact sheet on the importance and value of hollows as habitat for wildlife has been created by the Hotspots’s Fire Project. This informative guide outlines why these natural assets are so valuable, the role they play in many healthy ecosystems, the type of fauna that rely on hollows and what land managers can do to help protect them.
The main steps to be taken before a prescribed burn include: marking hollow bearing trees on a site plan, noting entry points and large fire scars that could weaken trees, raking around at-risk trees, and where possible wetting down the base of hollow-bearing trees directly before a fire.
